Cup Game Details

We are entering 2 U16 boys and 2 U16 girls teams into English Volleyball's National Cup competition this year.

National Cup U16 Boys Round 1 – Saturday 29th November 2008

The teams travelled to Newcastle Under Lyme for the 1st round of the National Cup. The teams we took were split into an U15 team of 7 players and U16 team of 6 players. The first game was between our two teams and was a good chance for both teams to find there feet and settle into the games. The U16 were the strongest of the two teams and were able to restrict their mistakes and come out comfortable winners in two sets winning 25-17, 25-12. Over the day the teams played better but were making too many mistakes and struggled to take command of the games. The U16 team finished 3rd and the U15 team finished 4th. The match that counted was U16 Nuneaton versus Cowley Language College, St Helen’s with some excellent play the team made to many basic errors and could not take control of the game this then led to Cowley taking their chances and winning the game 25-21, 25-23. This was a real credit to a team brought together from three schools and most players have only been playing for the last six weeks. The U15 team was also a group of players from three schools they were there for experience and will be entered into the U15 National Championships in January. The overall scores were:

Round 4 – Tuesday 2nd December

This week the league had a very important visitor. Jon Chetham who is the West Midlands Junior Volleyball Manager came to see the work going on in Nuneaton and support the progress made by the district in developing volleyball. He addressed the players and explained the pathways available through the West Midlands volleyball scheme. Jon is also a supporter of our National Cup teams as he is based in Rugby and will be travelling with the U16 girl’s team on Saturday for Round 1.

In the girls league three teams finished on 11 points this week and again they were separated by points difference. For the second week in a row it was Etone Ladies that came out on top with a difference of +4 with the Fantastic 4 second with -20 and the Beans with -28. This has closed the gap at the top of the overall table with 1 point between the Fantastic 4 and Etone Ladies. There is one week left of the 4v4 league and then he Warwickshire Cup on the 15th December so there is everything to play for.

In the boys section the teams were split into two pools after the initial rounds of games from positions 1-5 and 6-9. In the lower pool Wazim’s Wonders from St Thomas More won and came away with 4 points.

In the top pool the games were very close with In 2nd from Last Place winning round 4 in 2nd place was In last place and in 3rd was Wii not fit from Etone College. This has also brought the top of the league together with Wii Not Fit leading with 27 points, with In 2nd from last place on 26 points.

There are now 43 pupils on the Most Valuable Player League Table with Alex Bliss of St Thomas More and Declan O’Mara of Etone College still on top with five votes each leading the way with some controlled and exciting three touch volleyball. There are alot of players closing the gap on 4 and 3 votes. The star player from this week was Dan Creaney of In 2nd from last place who collected 3 votes from the teachers. Dan and Alex Bliss from the Fantastic 4 both won the Golden Ticket of a free session to Nuneaton Volleyball Club on Thursday nights 7-8pm at George Eliot school.

Another great week of volleyball, Round 5 is on Tuesday 9th December at Alderman Smith School Nuneaton 4.15pm start.
